Okay, So It Is Difficult

Hope you all had a great weekend! This week at my internship was pretty cool because in addition to programming, we also got to make some design decisions about games. My supervisor introduced us to two ideas for a game, and he gave us full disclosure to make different mathematical and design choices. Initially I thought that having this freedom would make the job easier, but I realized that having more to choose meant having less to work with. So, in reality, this turned out to be more difficult. It has given me a bigger appreciation for all the work that these folks have to do when they design a game. At first, my narrow access to the process made it seem as if anyone could do this job. But as I continue to work week by week, I see that there is a lot of advanced math and logic involved. My way of approaching any sort of problem has really changed through the work that I am doing here.

Also, if anyone is interested, my partner Armin and I finished the game tuning project we were on. It took some time, but hard work, determination, and creativity proved to be the necessary ingredients for success. The more and more we do, the better and innovative our approaches become. I feel like this internship will really prove helpful to me in the future.

Challenges: Having to make design decisions has shown me that making a game as a programmer is not at all as easy as I initially guessed it to be. But, I will continue to work at it.

Victories: We finished the tuning project we were working on. Also, we started a couple more games.

Thank you for reading! Please ask any questions you may have.

  1. You make an interesting point about more options leading to additional challenges! Do the design/mathematical choices directly impact the game plot? Also, do you find that designers have a full grasp on the game, or develop/implement ideas as they come?

Huge victories this week! I agree - this experience will definitely set you apart in the future! A great thing to add to your resume!

    1. Well, because I have not actually watched that many people program and develop games, I can really only base my answer off the programming that I've seen my supervisor do. But, from what I have seen, it seems like designers mostly have a full grip, with the occasional opportunity to improvise.

  2. It must feel good to finish the tuning project. What new project or game that you are working on are you hoping to finish next?

    1. Well next I'm kind of working on this half bingo half slot machine thing. I would go in more detail, but I signed a confidentiality agreement... Also, I'm working on a game that has an expanding wild, which basically means if a certain symbol pops up on a reel, it expands across the whole reel, possibly increasing winnings.

  3. Congrats! I know the tuning project was a difficult one so I'm glad you succeeded! What was the end result of that game?

    1. Well the we got the game finished and paying correctly, so the next step is for the artists and front end programmers to do their stuff. Then it gets put out online.

  4. Nice job! What's the main goal you try to achieve by making a game?

    1. Well for free online gambling, we try to make the game addictive enough for the old ladies who play it to get out their credit cards and buy more credits (I realize that's a generalization, but demographically its something like 80%). For us, that means making sure the features are interesting and that the player is rewarded enough to keep them interested.

  5. Hey Max, just looking at your blog and it seems you are having fun over here, and having a good experience in the game design world. What type of choices did you have to make?

    1. Well I got to make choices on how the feature would actually work. How often it would occur, how much would its reward be, what types of thing would trigger it. Usually, I have an exact guideline of how the game is to work and I just have to think of the most efficient way to write it.
